Ruffian Snakeskin Nails and Victorian Goth for fall 2013 #NYFW

Ruffian for Fall 2013 at New York Fashion Week showed a “Just Bitten” beauty look with black, snakeskin-like nails topped with a Cameo and Tulle.

Fitted jackets, A-line skirts, cropped pants all based in shades of black were complimented by rich Byzantine colors and tactile textures, all calling to a modern woman with a busy schedule and a crush on Benedict Cumberbatch as the modern Sherlock Holmes.

Ruffian is becoming know for styling creative nail designs for runway shows as seen with the red and violet velvet nails that created a stir and lead Ruffian to create their own nail polish with Birchbox.  So Fall  2013 was no exception with MAC lead manicurist Keri Blair created a  “Victorian Gothic Veiled Nail” with a lengthy almond shape inspired by Barbara Streisand. This look was created by placing MAC Nail Lacquer in Nightfall, a pearlized grey, on the underside; while the top side is covered with blackest-black Nocturnelle.

Next, a rough-cut thin veil of black tulle is placed on top and a top coat is placed to secure the tulle. The veil is then trimmed to size, allowing the edges to show and a mini flat-back cameo is placed along with another layer of tulle for a “bride-in-mourning” look.

The runway fashion highlighted simple of hip-skimming jackets for day and longer lengths for night paired with iridescent reptile prints made for a series of luxurious and wearable looks including leather and velvet. Accessories that will be trending big this fall from the show include ruffles, chokers, bows, collars and other neckline embellishments, but my favorite accessory is a funky Sherlock Holmes inspired hat that promises to trend as a big attention getter and another Sherlock Holmes reference.

Ruffian fall proves black is anything but basic and with an interesting mix of fabrics, textures and unique fashion and beauty accessories.

The two trends that inspired me most when I attended the show, and that I will be rocking this fall, will be the black nails and Sherlock hat.
